Romantic Things To Do in Savannah, GA
Savannah’s allure entangles my senses as I meander aimlessly thru her gritty, yet Southern hipster streets. Each corner seems to tell a story and my next journey thru her is no different at the Bonaventure Cemetery. My fascination with cemeteries runs deep in my Southern roots. Stepping foot thru the gated archway, it takes my breath away and captures me right from the start. I find myself in its avenues of live oaks and its quintessentially southern gothic look.
It transcends time with its natural cathedrals, tombstones, and sculptural gardens among the civil war heroes that are buried here. Along with the likes of local heroes: singer-songwriter Johnny Mercer and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Conrad Aiken. It is here where Savannah shows her respect. Some may think it odd to take a date here, but for me, the allure of the beauty of the cemetery and the misty morning makes for a perfect date.
Reminisce About Savannah’s Romantic Past
Before you go to Savannah, read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt. It is the New York Times bestseller written seductively about Savannah in 1994. Clint Eastwood made a movie about it a few years later. It is atmospherically centered in and around Savannah with the old-school charms of Savannah radiating through. Its impact has been greater than any other book written with Savannah as one of the main characters.
It is like a Lonely Planet guidebook that takes you to the most interesting haunts around the city and introduces you to its most captivating characters. Featured on the front cover of the book is the “Bird Girl” statue from Bonaventure Cemetery. In case you are wondering, she has now been relocated to the Telfair Museum of Art. I tell my lover the story of the bird girl and we are off to imagine her inspiration in the city.

Take a Walk in the Park
No visit to Savannah would be complete without a visit to Forsyth Park. There you will see the most alluring water fountain you have ever seen in the United States. Old Southern mansions have been restored and are surrounding the romantic park. The architecture is stunning with an imaginative flair of Southern styles made of brick and limestone.
There are American Gothics and Victorians on every corner, surrounded by Greek Revival columns in between. Even the most modest houses have shuttered windows, ornate doors, and big porches. To me, these touches of flowers on the porches and wreaths on the doors make for a festive walk around town with my lover.
Stroll Down River Street
This is a busy nine-block waterfront that stretches along the Savannah River. It was once a bustling, gritty wharf that has now grown into a flourishing area of galleries, an open-air marketplace, a good selection of restaurants and bars, and not one, but two candy stores. My lover and I walk hand in hand down the banks of the river and enjoy the afternoon’s breezes.
It is also here on the river walk that you will find the monument Waving Girl. Modeled after Florence, the daughter of a Sergeant Martus, who was stationed on Cockspur Island between Savannah and Tybee Island. As a child, she was lonely and would wave her kerchief to the sailors passing by. Over the course of 44 years, it was estimated that she welcomed more than 50,000 ships, as she continued her waving tradition.
