Skyscanner just revealed an interesting “survey of 700 crew from 83 countries in April 2013 by email of the database of cabincrew.com”.
Guess who is most likely to get an upgrade according to the survey?
That’s right:
Smartly dressed males in their 30’s who are traveling alone. (61%)
And the ones least likely to get an upgrade: females who wear revealing clothes, are traveling in a group or are teenagers.
Flying alone passengers were also likely to get an upgrade (72%)
I also enjoyed reading their article 15 ways to get a flight upgrade, which revealed some funny ways to get one, especially giggled at Supersize yourself, get a diplomatic passport, have friends in high places, and work in the Skyscanner PR team! O, and next time you fly, be sure an point out that sprained ankle and my advice: fly, fly, fly and join the frequent flyer programs of every airline you fly. This will not get you an upgrade, but as #3 in the article mentioned above, every little bit helps!

Love it - many of these are actually achievable, apart from the being male part :)

That's a nice tip! and also, if you're feeling lucky then it might be your day for a free upgrade.

Too bad luck has so much to do with it!

@jane What? I would have stumbled my way over there and told them how much pain I was in! If nothing, then you could always draw the airline logo on the cast and put a big X on it!

Flew with a broken ankle in a cast and no upgrades for me even though I thought I looked nice :(
